Die 2012, von vier enthusiastischen Anhängern des Hardrocks im Stil der 80er Jahre, gegründete Band KING ZEBRA, hat im September dieses Jahres das Album „SURVIVORS“ veröffentlicht. Es ist zwar bereits das vierte Werk der Schweizer „Hardrock-Fraktion“, jedoch das erste in Zusammenarbeit mit Crusader Records.

Ihr 2013 erschienenes Debüt „GREATEST HITS“, ebenso wie Nachfolger „WILD! WILD! WILD!“ (2015) und die 2019er EP „KING ZEBRA“ entstanden allesamt in Eigenproduktion. Mit „SURVIVORS“ hat das Quintett Eric St. Michaels (v), Roman Lauer (g/v), Jerry Napitupulu (g/v), Manu Judge (b/v) und Benjamin Grimm (dr), ein sehr geiles Stück Hardrock abgeliefert.

Beim Opener „UNDER DESTRUCTION“, geben die Jungs gleich zu Beginn einmal anständig Vollgas und drücken auch beim nächsten Song – „SHE DON’T LIKE MY ROCK & ROLL“ – das Gaspedal bis zum Bodenblech durch, gewürzt mit Bläserunterstützung – sehr cool. Das Intro-Riff von „DESPERATE“, packt dich im Vorbeifahren am Kragen und lässt dich bis zum Ende des Tracks nicht mehr vom Haken.

Es folgt mein ganz persönlicher Liebling „WALL OF CONFUSION“, mit der großartigen Guernica Mancini. Die „dreckige“ Röhre der Shouterin und Frontfrau der schwedischen Ladies THUNDERMOTHER, ist fast ein Gegensatz zum glasklaren Stimmorgan von Eric St. Michael. Für meinen Geschmack ist das allerdings, es passt genau diese Kombination wie „Anus auf Eimer“.

Die Melodic Rock Nummer „ON THE RUN“ eröffnet die zweite Hälfte des Albums, bevor es mit RUSH wieder auf’s Gaspedal geht. Vor allem der „zackige“ Mittelteil lässt den Einfluss der gleichnamigen Combo auf den Song erkennen. HOT COP LADY ist so ein typischer „ich-muß-mich-unbedingt-bewegen“-Song, beim dem auch der größte „Bewegungslegastheniker“ in Wallung kommt – ob im Takt oder nicht. Es folgt ein weiterer Track, der sich sofort in mein Ohr und mein Herz gespielt hat – „WE’RE THE SURVIVORS“ . Sehr feine Gitarrenharmonien, gewürzt mit geilen Riffs, getragen von der Rhythmusfraktion an Bass und Drums – alles was mein Herz begehrt.

Fette Drums und hervorragende Gitarrenarbeit machen „WE ARE ONE“ zu einer absoluten „Kick-Ass-Nummer“, bevor das Album mit „BE THE HUNTER“ einen würdigen Abschluss findet.

SURVIVORS hat mir sehr viel Freude bereitet. Wer auf guten handgemachten 80er Hard Rock abfährt ist hier sehr gut aufgehoben. Für mich ein schnörkelloser „Durchhörer“, keine Lückenfüller, sondern 10x astreiner Rock’n’Roll und dafür gibt’s von 9 Punkte. Habe ich eigentlich schon meine beiden „Lieblinge“ erwähnt? Es sind WE’RE THE SURVIVORS und WALL OF CONFUSION – nur für den Fall, dass du dich nicht entscheiden kannst, welchen Song du auschecken sollst…

KING ZEBRA, founded in 2012 by four enthusiastic followers of 80s style Hard Rock, just released their new album „SURVIVORS“. It‘s already the fourth release of the Swiss „Hard Rockers“, but the first one in collaboration with Crusader Records.

Their debut „GREATEST HITS“ from 2013, as well as the following „WILD! WILD! WILD!“ (2015) and the EP „KING ZEBRA“, released in 2019, were all produced by themselves. With „SURVIVORS“, the quintet Eric St. Michaels (v), Roman Lauer (g/v), Jerry Napitupulu (g/v), Manu Judge (b/v) and Benjamin Grimm (dr), has delivered an amazing piece of Hard Rock.

The opener „UNDER DESTRUCTION“ starts with full power and this gets continued by the following „SHE DON’T LIKE MY ROCK & ROLL“ supported by horns in the background – pretty cool. The intro Riff of „DESPERATE“ immediately „grabs you by the balls“ and doesn’t let go until the end of the track.

It‘s followed by my personal favorite „WALL OF CONFUSION“, featuring the great Guernica Mancini. The rough sound of the voice from the Shouter and Frontlady of the Swedish All-Female-Metal-Band THUNDERMOTHER is almost a contrary to the crystal clear vocals of Eric St. Michael. For my taste of music, however, it’s the perfect combination.

The Melodic Rock influenced „ON THE RUN“ is the opener for the second half of the album, then “RUSH“ pushes „the pedal to the metal“ again. Especially the speedy part in the middle reveals their respect to the eponymous band. “HOT COP LADY“ is one of thoese „I cant stand still“ songs, that even gets the biggest „rhythm-legasthenics“ going – either in or out of rhythm. It follows another track which occupied a place in my ears and my heart – “WE’RE THE SURVIVORS“. Badass guitar harmonies, refined with awesome Riffs – everything my heart desires.

Fat drum beats and brilliant guitars make “WE ARE ONE“ an absolute „kick-ass-track“, before the album finds a worthy conclusion with “BE THE HUNTER“.

SURVIVORS gave me a lot of pleasure. If you like pure handmade 80s Hard Rock, you can’t do anything wrong with this compilation. It’s a „listen through“ piece, no fillers but 10x straight Rock’n’Roll, so my rating is nine points. Did I already mention my two „faves“? It‘s WE’RE THE SURVIVORS and WALL OF CONFUSION – just in case you can’t decide which track you should check out…
